PUBLIC TALKS
Every second week on Thursday, researchers and artists will give presentations at Showroom MAMA on various aspects of the relationship between the imagination and reality. The first talk will be on the 22nd of November at 19:00.
Program:
20th December 2012: Storms and crises: How science is becoming ‘para-rational’.
Freek de Haan, sociologist from Erasmus University Rotterdam, will talk about weather systems and economies, i.e, chaotic and complex systems. He will also go into why they are inherently unpredictable by rational means – that is, through classical, deterministic science. This also connects with the crucial role of the better understanding of the nature of paradoxes, or the ‘para-rational’, present at the margins of all human discourse, specifically in economic conduct.

Public Talk # 1:
19:00. 22nd November 2012: Techno Fantasischism - Jump into the unknown.
A conversion between Darija Medic and Amy Suo Wu on connecting points throughout their thesis's, titled Navigating in the age of magical reproduction and Reclaiming uncertainty with para-rational methods, respectively.
Through historical and contemporary examples, the fantastical nature of the future and technology alike will be reflected on as spaces of possibilities that allow people to inject desires, fears and paranoias. The construction of reality is addressed through the performativity of code, the mechanism of self-fulling prophecy and the politics of knowledge legitimization. Further, meandering thoughts on technology and prediction as continuing practices of magic, as a means to control the natural world, will underpin the conversion.
FOR THOSE WHO MISSED IT, THE VIDEO WILL BE UPLOADED ASAP. BUT FOR NOW, HERE ARE SOME PHOTOS.

Biography
Darija Medić (RS, 1986) is a digital artist who investigates the realm of identity correction/theft/creation and the labyrinths of contemporary technological practices, through the uses of language, technology and design. The majority of her works are speculative interventions into the imperfections of systems that penetrate the principles of building social meaning and dynamics of power distribution.
Amy Suo Wu (AU, 1985) is a designer and artist. Central to her recent work is looking at how techno-scientific values and visions of the future not only narrativise the world, but create it. Her research reflects contemplations on the relationship between science, religion and spirituality, the interplay between history and fiction and the nullifying contradictions between personal truth and collective truth.
Danny van der Kleij (NL, 1984) is a media artist with a background in sound and interactive media. Van der Kleij's current work revolves mainly around the role of sound in encryption and radio, and how these have been used by the military as well as pirate radio broadcasters. In this context, his main interest lies in taking something as invisible as the waves of a radio broadcast, or something as opaque as encryption, and making it visible.
Freek de Haan MSc (NL, 1984) is a teacher of sociology at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam. As a researcher he is studying the material nature and pragmatic use of paradox in pedagogical and clinical discourses.
